GLP-1 Injections are used to help individuals with obesity or overweight manage their weight by affecting hunger, satiety, and insulin production, leading to a reduction in food intake and improved metabolic control.
GLP-1 injections help to control hunger by acting on areas of the brain responsible for appetite regulation. They help you feel fuller for longer periods, making it easier to reduce caloric intake. By slowing down the process of digestion, GLP-1 helps promote satiety (the feeling of being full). This means food stays in the stomach longer, prolonging feelings of fullness. GLP-1 injections increase insulin secretion in response to food intake and help the body use insulin more effectively. This can contribute to better blood sugar control, especially in individuals with type 2 diabetes. These medications also help the body manage blood sugar levels by promoting the release of insulin when needed and reducing the release of glucagon (a hormone that raises blood sugar).
You will be seen first by one of our medical professionals for a consultation to determine if a GLP-1 medication is right for you. Depending on the specific medication prescribed, GLP-1 injections can be given either daily or weekly. These injections are typically administered subcutaneously (under the skin) in areas like the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Most patients can self-administer the injections at home after receiving proper training from their healthcare provider.
GLP-1 weight loss injections are typically recommended for individuals who: Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obesity) or a BMI of 27 or higher with an obesity-related condition (like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol), have difficulty losing weight through diet and exercise alone, have type 2 diabetes and need better blood sugar control along with weight management. Avoid GLP-1 medications if you have a history of pancreatitis or other serious gastrointestinal conditions, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. GLP-1 medications are not recommended during pregnancy, have a history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 and/or are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication.
Clinical studies show that patients on GLP-1 injections can lose significant amounts of weight—up to 15-20% of their body weight, depending on the individual and dosage. Patients often experience reduced cravings and less frequent feelings of hunger, making it easier to adhere to a calorie-controlled diet. GLP-1 injections are also beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes, as they help regulate blood sugar levels. Some studies suggest that GLP-1 agonists may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, like heart attacks and strokes, which is especially beneficial for people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
It depends on the amount of weight you are wanting to lose and the amount of time it takes for you to achieve your goal, each individual patient is different. While GLP-1 injections can lead to significant weight loss, the effects are typically most effective when continued long-term. If the treatment is stopped, some people may regain the weight they lost. It’s important to note that these injections should be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan, which includes a healthy diet and regular exercise.
